This descent was interminable.

Rene scowled at nothing in particular and felt with her foot for the next rung. She had been climbing for a while now, and already she was heartily sick of this dingy little enclosed space with its stale smell and featureless walls. There were only so many times you could repeat the routine of grab-rung-and-lower-foot before it got tiresome.

This was not new, or out of the ordinary; indeed, it was so much an oft-recurring thing as to be quite customary. Alva stood by the well long after Rene had disappeared from sight.

Her small face was somber. She remained without moving, standing propped up on tiptoe on the raised rim of stone surrounding the well, chin resting on her folded arms. For a long time, she stared unseeingly into the clinging masses of shadow that lurked inside the shaft. Then she blinked, dusted off her skirt, and hopped off. Bright eyes surveyed the charred shells of houses and the silent statues.
